Los Sueños Marriott Resort (Playa Herradura,201 rooms & suites, pool, lighted tennis courts, conference rooms, spa, marina, air, golf course, mini-bar, 4 restaurants, air, phone, bar, valet parking). Los Sueños, or The Dreams, and its sister Marriott hotel outside San José are two of the most luxurious and upscale large hotels in Costa Rica. The Jacó property is related to the surrounding par 72, 18-hole golf course designed by Ted Robinson. Covering land that had previously been cleared for cattle, the flat, shadeless course is nevertheless manicured. A new yacht marina has been added to attract the international sailing crowd and the protected harbor already lures small cruise ships. The huge Spanish mission-style hotel is painted an adobe brick color, with arched hallways and brick Catalan vaulted ceilings in the downstairs lounge. The public areas feature hand-set, made-toorder, aged colonial tile floors in the shape of oriental rugs. Though it is located on a dark sand Pacific beach, no one bothers to swim in the sea. Instead, everyone chooses the long, canal-like swimming pool that wanders among waterfalls and islands of gardens with rows of sun chairs to the swim-up bar. The pool’s clever design reminds us of the Aztec floating gardens and the canals of Xochimilco, Mexico. Everything you would expect in a luxury hotel.
